Road/Runway Weather Information Systems (RWIS) technology provides vital information on pavement and weather conditions to transportation maintenance and operations personnel. The technology has been proven to enhance winter travel safety while reducing both the amount of deicing chemical used and the cost of maintaining safer roads and runways for the traveling public. RWIS enables road maintenance and operations personnel to monitor changing weather conditions in real time and make informed and timely decisions in response to the effects of Mother Nature.
RWIS (Road Weather Information Systems) consists of one or more sites, each containing a suite of sensors that gather weather and pavement data and then report to a central location where authorized personnel can view the information. Pavement sensors are installed in the travel lanes of the highway or on airport runways. The pavement sensors measure temperature, freeze point, moisture, form of moisture (snow/ice), and a
